I’m Bored, What’s There To Do? (7/11 - 7/16)

Alonzo Mourning, pirates, and a mass of bike riders are all in Miami this week…

The 11th Annual Zo’s Summer Groove to benefit Alonzo Mourning charities takes place this weekend. Events include a comedy show (I was there last year and it was HYSTERICAL), a FREE block party, and an all-star basketball game.

The International Mango Festival will be at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The weekend-long event begins with the Pirates Ball Friday night.

The City of Miami Beach Community Bicycle Ride will take place Saturday morning at 9am sharp. The trip begins at Miami Beach Bicycle Center and covers 15 miles of Miami (with a police escort for an uninterrupted ride).

Theater events this weekend include the Summer Shorts Festival at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; Tom Foolery at the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theater; the on-going International Hispanic Theatre Festival at various locations and The Fabulous Fable Factory at the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theater; and the conclusion of SMUT at the GableStage.

Miami Beach Cinematheque’s “Crossover Cinema” of Leon Ichaso continues this week with the showing of Ichaso’s 1985 film Crossover Dreams Thursday at 8:30pm. The first 20 people to the screening will receive free tickets to the Miami Premiere of Ichaso’s latest film, El Cantante starring Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, at the Regal Cinemas August 2nd.

Art exhibits to check out this weekend include Miami Beach Beyond Deco, an en plein air exhibition at the Miami Beach Visitors Center/Art Deco Museum,  and Arnold Steiner’s, or AS1, “Submecha 2” Multi Media exhibit opening at the Antikulture Gallery Saturday.

For yourself, take a yoga class at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden Thursday or Friday; enjoy a FREE day of beauty sponsored by Latina Magazine at the Deauville Beach Resort; or check out the Exotic Dance Class for every day women being offered in Coral Gables and Kendall (Miami Beach’s Exotic Dance Class is July 28th).

As always, visit the Event Calendar for the on-going parties, happy hours, theater and art events. If your event is missing, send it to me!!! I’m especially looking for events July 26th - July 28th because I’ll be in town!!!

(Thanks to Doug Eames for this week’s photo)
