Staying Safe in Miami

Vacation safety is a top priority

Keeping safe when you are away from home should be on the top of everyone’s list when it comes to having a good vacation. Sadly, thanks to TV shows like CSI Miami, Dexter, and Miami Vice, Miami does not have the best reputation when it comes to crime. However the reality is far different, and by following these safety tips you can enjoy a relaxing vacation without worry.

Your hotel room
Most hotel rooms will provide a safe; be sure to keep your valuables inside it at all times. Keep your door locked when you are in your room - most doors have a dead bolt you can use. If you check out on the last day and leave your luggage at the hotel, get a small padlock to keep your suitcase locked for those few hours you are away; these work well at the airport also.

Going to the beach
Enjoying the beach is one of the main reasons people love to visit Miami. But a good day out can be ruined quickly when you realize your belongings have been stolen. If you decide to swim in the ocean, make sure someone in your group stays to keep an eye on your stuff. If you are alone or part of a couple and you both want to swim, ask the nearby lifeguard to watch your bags.
If you visit the beach at night, do not take anything valuable with you. Phones, keys and wallets are easily stolen if you get distracted. Leave the purse at home if you decide to take a romantic moonlight walk.

Miami Nightlife
Miami boasts some of the best nightlife in the world. To make sure you enjoy your night, have a plan of how you will be getting home at the end of the evening. Also pick a designated meeting area if you lose each other. Keep an eye on your drink and never leave it unattended. Of course people go out to meet new people, but if you feel someone is bothering you unnecessarily, let the doormen in the club know; that’s what they are there for.

Walking at night
Keeping safe at night is always very important. South Beach is a busy area but there are still things you can do to look after yourself. Only walk home if you are in a group. If you are alone or not sure of the way home, take a taxi. Don’t walk on the quieter streets, but if you have to, walk in the middle of the street; this will keep you away from the alleyways and bushes. If you are drunk, always take a taxi.

What to do if you have a problem
If you do encounter a problem on your vacation, call the police and file a report. The Miami Beach Police Department is located at 1100 Washington Ave. Also, alert your hotel manager if it is a problem at your hotel.

Have a great vacation!
If you follow the above advice and plan for a safe time when you are here in Miami, you will have a wonderful vacation. Theft and crime can happen anywhere, but by keeping aware of your surroundings and looking after yourself and your friends, you can be sure your trip will go smoothly.
