Nobu: Top shelf sushi and service (and price)  

I’ve been looking for the best sushi in Miami.  I’ve been to 1/2 dozen restaurants so far including the much hyped Bond Street and the pleasant Sushi Samba.  I’ve really been looking for a first rate place though, one that compares to the best sushis I’ve ever had.

Nobu fits this bill nicely.  Four of us went on a Saturday night at 7:30pm.  We were seated immediately but soon found that we had just beat the rush.

We started with the yellowtail sashimi with jalepenos and the fish immediately blew us all away.  The waiter was extremely helpful in helping us choose our selections.  In addition, we were swarmed by numerous other attendants, removing plates, refilling our waters promptly and bringing our food and drinks.  The service was top notch, not usual for Miami Beach.  The only complaint I have is that the table was a bit small for the size of the plates brought.

We tried the Black Cod which was done just perfectly and melted in our mouths.  We also had a sushi dinner to split and ordered the rest of the meal ala carte.  Memorable items included the uni which was the best any of us has ever had.  The special fish was a sockeye salmon which was also excellent.  The live scallop was out of this world and the toro was expectedly delicious.  Every piece of fish was fresh and prepared exceptionally well.  I wouldn’t recommend the eel, the ikura or the masago - they were fine but not extraordinary.

This sushi restaurant is in a class much higher than the “Best Of” Bond Street which is nearly as expensive and doesn’t approach Nobu’s quality.

Be aware that our check came out to $140/piece including a few drinks and tip (which is 18% added as customary at most South Beach restaurants).

I will be returning.
