China Grill: Excellent Food, Horrible Service

My group of five waited for a table for forty-five minutes, after being told that the wait would only be fifteen minutes. No one came to update us, we had to keep checking back with the host. I watched as several groups were seated ahead of us. They could have had reservations, but who knows. When we were finally seated, the food was excellent, but my salmon took a long time to come. Refills were infrequent as well. They sat my group in the back although there appeared to be many good seats in the main dining area. The food was a little pricey, but hey that’s South Beach.

As long as people like you keep coming back, they’ll have no incentive to improve their service—and China Grill is much too expensive for that! You waived a huge red flag by being so polite to them and actually encouraged the lousy service. I have a little trick that I use in such situations if I get so much as inkling of apathy from a waiter: I immediately get up, I walk toward the kitchen area, and I ask as many waiters as I can for whatever it is I need -as they come out of the kitchen (don’t go up to them at other tables, that’s kind of rude!). That usually solves the problem, and if it doesn’t, I head straight to the bar (if there is one) and harass the bartender who in turn harasses the waiters for not doing their job. It doesn’t always work and you don’t want to be too rambunctious because they are, afterall, handling your food. But please don’t just sit there if the service is bad, call attention to it on the spot!!
