What’s There To Do? (Cirque du Soleil and more)

Cirque du Soleil returns to Miami this week with Corteo at Bicentennial Park. The Opening Party will be at Cameo Thursday night. Everyone at the party is eligible to win a pair of Tapis Rouge (Cirque VIP) tickets.

South Florida International Auto Show and Miami Book Fair International both wrap up this weekend. Don’t miss former Miami mayor Alex Daoud at the Book Fair signing his first hand account Sins of South Beach: The True Story of Crime, Corruption, and the Making of Miami Beach. Also not to miss at the Fair, Daughter of a Cuban Revolutionary, Marissa Chibas’s story of three significant figures in Cuban history and her life, written and performed by Marissa herself.

Another weekend-long event is NASCAR Ford Championship Weekend at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Other events in the area include: Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain, host of the Travel Channel’s “No Reservations”, at the Arsht Center; Sarah Brightman at the BankAtlantic Center; Joe Jackson at the Fillmore Miami Beach; the So You Think You Can Dance Tour at the AA Arena. A new exhibit, Limpiezas (Cleansings), opens at Carol Jazzar’s Contemporary Art Gallery. Also, the Miami Dolphins host the Oakland Raiders at Dolphin Stadium this weekend.

Films at the Cinematheque include My Mexican Shivah (Morirse está en Hebreo) Thursday, Momma’s Man Friday and Saturday, and The Pleasure of Being Robbed on Sunday.

And, of course, there’s the parties. Visit the Nightlife section of Event Calendar for the list but here are a few that didn’t make it: Dwayne Wade will be at Cameo Friday night to celebrate the start of the Miami Heat season; Usher will host the party at Prive/Opium Garden Saturday night; Ron Brown will perform his smash hit “Pop Champagne” at Mansion Sunday; Sunday at Cameo is the Super Fly and Sexy party featuring sounds by DJ Kool G and hosted by 99 Jamz’s Big Will.

FYI for early next week: the Miami Short Film Festival begins on Monday at various locations around town. Also, Crunch is introducing a new class called Gunning®, an upper-body cardio workout using a new piece of equipment, the Krankcycle®. Free 30 minute classes are being offered to the public.

Visit the Event Calendar for details on all these events and more. If your event is not on the Calendar, send it to me now!
