Rick (Formerly of Stuck on the Palmetto) Has A New Blog

The South Florida Daily Blog - A Daily Review and Discussion of South Florida Blogs.

Hooray! Our friend, Rick, is launching a new blog. The name of the site is The South Florida Daily Blog, it aims to be a meeting place for people interested in things happening around South Florida. I’m sure it will be a success. Building a loyal community is something Rick knows a lot about.

Here is what Rick has to say bout is the new venture…

“It’s about spotlighting the extraordinary, the controversial and the informative in South Florida blogging. It’s about promoting and supporting the local blogging scene. It’s about being a central point for South Florida blog readers to go and hang out and discuss ideas and local issues.”

For those who don’t know, Rick, and his blogging partner, Alex, used to publish the critically acclaimed website, Stuck on the Palmetto, until a “journalist” named Bob Norman from New Times threatened to expose Rick’s professional life.

Rather than jeopardize his professional career, Rick choose to close Stuck on the Palmetto, much to the dismay of his many readers.

The episode brought out a very ugly side of the Miami blogging community.

If you got time to wade through all the comments, you can read about the incident at Critical Miami.

When Rick and I had dinner and discussed his new blog, he said “for the most part, it’s going to be me commenting and directing readers where to go for the good stuff in South Florida blogging.” He also mentioned posting will be pretty much limited to the beginning and the ending of each day, but he will bring back some of the recurring articles that his readers had grown to love.

As of now, there’s just a Google Page announcing the site is coming soon. Rick will begin posting on February 4th.

On the Google Page, Rick mentions “spotlighting the controversial,” but I wonder if he will be pulling any punches? After seeing how he was treated by the so-called “real journalists,” I sure can understand being gun-shy to post his true feelings on sensitive issues.

If you are interested in local news, make sure to to bookmark Rick’s new site (http://southfloridadailyblog.blogspot.com/), or subscribe to the RSS feed.

Welcome back, Rick! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us. The Miami blogosphere hasn’t been the same without you!

How do others feel, are you happy Rick’s coming back? What are your thoughts about writing anonymously? Leave Rick a message in the comments below.

Scott says:

Can’t wait to start reading.  So many blogs in SoFla and honestly, I need to be better about reading more people.  Can’t wait for Rick to launch!  Welcome back, Rick.

I just went there to bookmark it and I noticed that right now, it’s only open to invited readers.  I don’t know if that’s going to change, but if it doesn’t, I hope I get an invite.  Because Rick is da bomb!  (Flattery gets me everywhere, right?)

This is awesome news!  Like they say, all the great ones make a comeback.  SOP was great.  Good luck with your new blog and I look forward to reading it.

Rick, we’re expecting some serious ass-eating out of you, dude. Don’t let us down!

“Rick, we’re expecting some serious ass-eating out of you, dude.”

Joe, don’t you mean ass-kicking?

“Ass-eating” sounds (gross) and also very similar to ass-kissing, which I don’t expect Rick to do.

I’ve missed SotP, and although I understand the new Blog will be different, it’ll be nice to have his *voice* back.

Welcome back…

I’m with you Christian!!!

Rick says:

Hey, folks, thanks for the support. Just an FYI…the “invite only” thing is temporary until 2/4. I had to do it that way in order to keep it inaccessible. Come 2/4, it will be a public site.

I do plan on offering some limited commentary, but for the most part I’m going to leave that up to readers. Based upon the activity at SotP, that should prove interesting in and by itself.

If any one has any ideas on things that they would like to see, shoot me an email at thesouthfloridadailyblog at gmail.com.

Joe says:

“gross”

...[chuckle]...Umm, no, not THAT kind of ass-eating. “Eating” in the metaphorical sense. Like what lions do.

Rick, seriously, I’ll register and host the domain for you to free; just please get off that cheap blogspot stuff.

And with that note, here is Episode V

Rick says:

Carlos…

You know, at some point after I made my initial assessment of you after your run in with Miami PD, I thought I may have been mistaken and that you were, after all, not a huge Richard.

But, man, the way you’ve hung on to this and the rumors and unsubstantiated BS you have thrown around the SoFla blogosphere in the last month pretty much confirms what I thought at the get go.

Let me ask you: are you able to let it go? Are you able to get past it? And if not, when will you stop spamming other blogs with your trivial pursuits?

I mean, really. Surely you have something more meaniningful in your life than, well….me.

Alex says:

But of course, the only way Miller gets the attention he craves is either by getting arrested or writing SotP fiction. I guess he ain’t eager to repeat the former.

Seriously Carlos, get a life.

carlos Miller says:

Rick,

As long as you keep putting yourself in the public eye of the South Florida blogosphere, you are free game.

And that is something you should know considering how much time you used to spend trivializing and bashing and mocking and instigating on SOTP.

I really don’t care what your assessment of me is. As far as I’m concerned, you’re just an anonymous voice on the Internet who is unable to stand by what he writes.

Even the Babalunians, whom you despise so much, are unafraid to stand by what they write.

If you really want to make this personal, then be my guest. It reveals a lot about your personality.

I’m just having fun doing what you used to do on SOTP and what you will be doing on your new blog.

Oy vay, Gus, looks like a can o’ worms on 411!  Well, I’m happy that Rick is coming back in some format or another.  No matter what opinions and beliefs may differ, it’s good to have a central place in common to discuss things.  Yay!

I would also say I’m moist with anticipation, but I don’t think that’s possible if you are going through peri-menopause LOL!!!

Posted on 01/21/2008 at 6:41 PM

Rick says:

I guess I should take it as a compliment that you are trying to copy SotP, Carlos. Thanks, I guess.

Have fun.

CB says:

What’s to keep the same thing from happening that went down with SotP?

Serious question, not trying to be a dick.

Posted on 01/22/2008 at 7:33 PM

PD says:

Yay! The departure of SotP left a serious void in SoFla blogging. Brrr. Let diversity reign!

Posted on 01/22/2008 at 8:52 PM

Rick says:

That’s a good question, CB.

The allegations of me blogging on my company’s time were serious to me. After trying several times to explain how I blogged and people still not accepting the fact that it was not being done on “company time”, I realized that the appearance was more important than the reality of what was actually going on.

So between that and the fact that it could forever be held over my head and questioned by people who either knew what I do for a living or were vindictive enough to intimate, question and/or spend their time speculating and/or literally probing the internet for that information, I realized that SotP could not continue in the form that was SotP. Quite frankly, I wasn’t willing to compromise on that format and keep posting as SotP. As a result, Alex and I decided to close it down.

With SFDB there will not be any of those perceptions or questions: the blogging will be done at the beginning and at the end of each day. That way, the intimidations and the accusations and the threat of exposing my privacy is not that big a deal any more. It’s still something that I want to keep under wraps, but no longer will that information be able to be used in a vindictive manner.

In addition, I will not be commenting on or including any newspaper blogs, including both SoFla New Times blogs, on the blogroll. My comments over at The Daily Pulp are what really aggravated things and with this arrangement, that won’t be an issue.

I plan on sticking with this as long as I’m in South Florida, CB. I really would like to see the SoFla blogosphere grow and develop as community rather than as a loose group of individual efforts, which is where I kind of see it now.

I think others who know me can back up my commitment.
