Ochocinco a No-Show to South Beach Lunch Tweetup

January 06, 2011 By Carlos Miller in Miami: Local NewsMiami: Sports NewsTechnology  | 5 Comments

Those of us who run in social media circles are used to the self-described gurus who have become cyber celebrities in their own right.

But speak their name outside our cozy little social media world and you’ll be met with blank stares.

Then there’s Chad Ochocinco, wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals; a Miami native who is not only a star on the football field, but a bona fide rock star on Twitter, with more than 1.5 million followers and 23,000 tweets.

He tweets so much that was fined $25,000 by the NFL for tweeting during a preseason game last year.  The NFL not only forbids the use of electronic devices on sidelines, it forbids players from posting to social media sites 90 minutes prior to a game.

Ochocinco responded to this fine on Twitter by sarcastically pointing out the NFL is taking two months of his Bugatti payments.

Ochocinco is also known for hosting lunch tweetups with his fans. It’s not uncommon for him to invite all his followers to meet him at a certain restaurant where he foots the bill.

On Monday, when he was making his way back to Miami from Cincinnati, he invited his followers for a “late lunch” at David’s Café on South Beach.

I’m rarely one to turn down a free meal and much less an excellent photo/video opportunity, so I headed out to South Beach to cover the tweetup.

He never showed up, apparently getting caught up in other things.

And eventually other questionable tweets as you will see in the above video.

But he is well-respected at David’s Café where he even has his own dish on the menu. The Ochocinco Special consists of chicken breast mixed with white rice and scrambled eggs and served with sweet plantains.

They say he hosts frequent tweetups where anywhere between 50 to 150 people show up. On Monday, there were only two other fans besides myself who were obviously waiting for him.

We’ll be sure to catch him next time.

"Ochocinco a No-Show to South Beach Lunch Tweetup"

Matt Meltzer says:

I mean, really? How many times have you been heading home from the airport and been like “Oh, yeah, lunch at Restaurant X” sounds good. Then you get a call or a text or remember you have to pick your dog up at the groomers, and don’t show. I’d have actually been more surprised if he HAD showed up.

Carlos Miller says:

I agree. I’m not giving him shit about not showing up because he has come through many times in the past.

But I was already determined to post a video and story on this regardless, so that’s what I’m left with.

Thanks for posting the video. Maybe Ochocinco will come through, next time’s he’s home. He sounds like a cool guy.

Matt, is congratulations in order? Let me guess, you got a tri-color? A black and tan? A ruby? A blenheim just like Ginger? wink

Matt Meltzer says:

Hahaha. Another Betta, but you’re close Christy.

I was just using that as an errand example some people have. Kinda like “Oh, I have to pick my kids up and soccer.” And we all know that’s never happening.
