Now is Not the Time For You to Relocate to Miami
There was an article in the Miami Herald last week about the new Chik-fil-A opening in Miami Lakes. The new store, which for the unaware is a fast food restaurant, received over 6000 applications for 65 jobs. That’s just over a 1% acceptance rate, if you’re not so good at math. To put it in perspective, the Wharton School of Business, arguably America’s most prestigious MBA program, accepts 13 percent. So, to put it simply, it’s easier to get into Wharton than it is to get a job at Chik-Fil-A.
Why do I bring this up? Well, despite having the third worst job market in America (behind perennial front-runners St. Louis and Detroit) and boasting a serious unemployment rate creeping toward 15 percent, people still seem to think it’s a good idea to relocate to Miami-Dade County. Without work. This is about as good of an idea as moving across the country to try and win back an ex who is already married to someone else. There’s no room for you, so don’t waste your time.
NOT JUST MORE “LAST MAN ON THE ISLANDâ€
I have been known to discourage potential newcomers who write in to this site with advisories about cultural difficulties and the difficulty of life here. But, much as I hate to admit it, those are really just the opinions that I – and many other Americans who move here – have. The unemployment, well, that’s just cold hard facts. We have over 220,000 people who already live here who can’t find work. And unless you’re bringing in some rare, in-demand skill that nobody here can produce, you are at the end of the line when it comes to hiring. Even before our economy went to shit a lot of local employers would automatically toss a resume with an out-of-town address. Now, it’s more or less every business here. With all other things being equal, we need to hire locally.
MIAMI’S NOT GOING ANYWHERE
If you’re suffering through this winter in a place like Washington DC or Minneapolis or Milwaukee, places with relatively (key word) good job markets, stay where you are. Because it’s better to be cold and afford heat for your apartment than to be homeless in a warm city. This is not the time for you to move here. We have enough problems employing the people we have, the last thing we need are more job seekers. And with the inevitable wave of Haitian immigrants we are going to be seeing in the next few months, your chances of landing a job just went form slim to none.
If you really are dead set on coming here, wait a couple years. Wait until our economy picks up and we don’t have an unofficial unemployment rate that some have quoted near 25 percent. Miami will still be here, despite what Al Gore says. The weather will still be good and the nightlife will still be world class. But right now, right now is not the time to come here. Suck it up for two more winters and check back in when we have a vacancy.

Yeah, I will probably have to ditch Miami to find work. Not being a club kid the nightlife doesn’t matter much, but I will miss the insane politics and generally surreal culture.
I guess I could just move to Chicago.
