Now is Not the Time For You to Relocate to Miami

January 28, 2010 By Matt Meltzer in Miami: Local News  | 20 Comments

There was an article in the Miami Herald last week about the new Chik-fil-A opening in Miami Lakes. The new store, which for the unaware is a fast food restaurant, received over 6000 applications for 65 jobs. That’s just over a 1% acceptance rate, if you’re not so good at math. To put it in perspective, the Wharton School of Business, arguably America’s most prestigious MBA program, accepts 13 percent. So, to put it simply, it’s easier to get into Wharton than it is to get a job at Chik-Fil-A.

Why do I bring this up? Well, despite having the third worst job market in America (behind perennial front-runners St. Louis and Detroit) and boasting a serious unemployment rate creeping toward 15 percent, people still seem to think it’s a good idea to relocate to Miami-Dade County. Without work. This is about as good of an idea as moving across the country to try and win back an ex who is already married to someone else. There’s no room for you, so don’t waste your time.

NOT JUST MORE “LAST MAN ON THE ISLAND”

image

I have been known to discourage potential newcomers who write in to this site with advisories about cultural difficulties and the difficulty of life here. But, much as I hate to admit it, those are really just the opinions that I – and many other Americans who move here – have. The unemployment, well, that’s just cold hard facts. We have over 220,000 people who already live here who can’t find work. And unless you’re bringing in some rare, in-demand skill that nobody here can produce, you are at the end of the line when it comes to hiring. Even before our economy went to shit a lot of local employers would automatically toss a resume with an out-of-town address. Now, it’s more or less every business here. With all other things being equal, we need to hire locally.

MIAMI’S NOT GOING ANYWHERE

image

If you’re suffering through this winter in a place like Washington DC or Minneapolis or Milwaukee, places with relatively (key word) good job markets, stay where you are. Because it’s better to be cold and afford heat for your apartment than to be homeless in a warm city. This is not the time for you to move here. We have enough problems employing the people we have, the last thing we need are more job seekers. And with the inevitable wave of Haitian immigrants we are going to be seeing in the next few months, your chances of landing a job just went form slim to none.

If you really are dead set on coming here, wait a couple years. Wait until our economy picks up and we don’t have an unofficial unemployment rate that some have quoted near 25 percent. Miami will still be here, despite what Al Gore says. The weather will still be good and the nightlife will still be world class. But right now, right now is not the time to come here. Suck it up for two more winters and check back in when we have a vacancy.

"Now is Not the Time For You to Relocate to Miami"

mkhall says:

Yeah, I will probably have to ditch Miami to find work. Not being a club kid the nightlife doesn’t matter much, but I will miss the insane politics and generally surreal culture.

I guess I could just move to Chicago.

Gus says:

Rebecca ditched Miami for Connecticut and she sounds happy.

Chicago is an awesome city.

In 1994, I moved from South Beach to Chicago, without a plan. I chose Chicago, mostly due to “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. ” I found a nice place to live on the North Side in a neighborhood called East Lakeview. The Windy City treated me well. People from the Mid West are cool. There’s more stuff to do up there.

Change is good.

But we’d hate to see you go!

You’ve got a lot of friends here. =)

Matt Meltzer says:

whatever Gus. I was up there for three days in March. Freezing rain, guy. Freezing rain. A city can be as awesome as it wants but when you can only enjoy it three months out of the year, what’s the point?

I will say that midwestern people are my favorite, though. Too bad they all have to live in the midwest.

Hmmm.... says:

This author’s writting just plains stinks.

No wonder why this man can’t get a job.

Posted on 02/01/2010 at 2:43 PM

Gus says:

mkhall, I forgot you and Rebecca used to be neighbors. We don’t see you posting here very often, and I was just trying to point out, there was another member who recently left. Sorry if my link came across flippant.

Matt, I was only trying to say, Chicago might be a good city for a professional guy like mkh. Seems like they have more jobs up there.

I apologize if I offended anyone. =(

P.S. Hmmm…., go f-yourself.

Posted on 02/02/2010 at 10:08 AM

mkhall says:

Good heavens, no, I’m certainly not offended! I’ve been in contact with Rebecca—a bunch of her stuff is in my garage right now, in fact—and I know she likes it in CT.

Right now I’m still trying to find the best course of action. If I can get enough freelance writing work to stay where I am, great. If I can’t, though, I have to consider relocating to somewhere that has available jobs.

Hmmm says:

Gus, are you not are the head of this website? Where do you find any professionalism to tell a reader to go “F-off”?

Let me inform you Gus, as you do not seem all astute, I’m from Minneapolis, and what was written in this paltry opinionated article is not true.

This is not an opinion, however, this is a fact : Mr. Meltzer can not write.

Not once did Mr. Meltzer apply a fact to sustain his biased claims for not locating a reasonable professional job. In fact, his only reasonable statistic, came from a Chick-Fil-A want ad.

Sure Mr. Meltzer wrote further than say : ABCD, however, there is not one ounce of journalism reported other then again, his own personal prerogative.

In closing Gus, before you as a site manager,  start jumping and ripping your reader’s throats off for posting comments, think about your responsibility of being big-head of Miamibeach411. You would hate to alienate your readers wouldn’t you?

Posted on 02/02/2010 at 1:38 PM

Matt Meltzer says:

I actually based the Minneapolis and Milwaukee and DC claims on the same article that rated Miami as the #48 job market out of the top 50. All three of those cities were ranked a lot higher. There were some smaller cities ranked even higher, but I didn’t think Mt. Vernon, WA had enough people reading this site to rate a mention.

And I’ve never, EVER, claimed to be any sort of objective journalist. I’m not. That’s not what I do. What I put here is, and has always been, my opinion. I sometimes weave in facts to back it up, but I’m not a newswriter. never have been, never will be. And if you don’t like my writing, well, that’s fine. Honestly, the only people whose opinion matters is that of those who sign my checks. And they seem to like me just fine.

Posted on 02/02/2010 at 4:59 PM

Hmmmm says:

Hey Mat, don’t take my claiming/stating that your writing sucks personal.

Having an attitude of only self-servicing the individuals who cut your checks, is not the stance one should think. Especially if your performance is why you are getting paid. Maybe one day someone will buy Gus, and then fire you.

Constructive criticism is what you just received. Good luck on the J.O.B

Posted on 02/02/2010 at 5:07 PM

Matt Meltzer says:

Not sure how one would think a stance, but I will leave that one alone.

My point is that YOU may not like what I write. And that’s fine. trust me, after the years of angry comments I’ve gotten I never take any of that personally. But the majority, vast majority dare I say, of people do like it. And when you are going to take controverial stances on things, people will inherently not like you.

So if you think I stink, well, then that’s fine. Most people disagree. And nobody’s going to fire someone who writes things people actually read. Even if it’s just to get riled up and leave angry comments.

Laurie says:

Sorry Juicey, can’t take credit for that one, but looks like someone is going to start fighting fire with fire. I warned you about spamming the site anonymously. I think Gus was only expressing the opinion of most of the MB411.com employees/contributors when he told you to go f-yourself.

Two things I can’t figure out here:
1) if you have a problem with everyone on this site (Gus is unprofessional, most of our writers can’t write or have lousy opinions) why do you continue to spend so much time on here?
2) why Gus has yet to ban you from posting on the site?

Posted on 02/02/2010 at 9:18 PM

Matt Meltzer says:

I can’t answer for #1, but insofar as #2, I believe Gus has not banned him because while Juicy may rip on some of us from time to time, what he says is not horrifficaly offensive or inappropriate. He he doesn’t like it, fine. It’s a public forum, and he’s not being obscene or anything.

I can’t speak for Gus, but I know he’s a big free speech guy and that - my guess - is why he hasn’t been banned.

Posted on 02/02/2010 at 9:43 PM

Laurie says:

Yes, I’ve told Juicy in the past we welcome both positive and negative feedback (everyone loves to see you and Carlos get into it with the negative posters) but there’s something about him doing it anonymously that just doesn’t seem right.

Rebecca Lucente says:

You all just got screen captured! And Matt can write. Cosmo certainly seems to think so. I actually went to one of his articles while I am writing one of my own for inspiration. Imagine my surprise to find my name! <3 And I agree about the midwest people. Living there is their greatest fault.

Posted on 03/05/2010 at 12:14 PM

Matt Meltzer says:

Thanks, Becca. Much appreciated.

Posted on 03/05/2010 at 3:48 PM

Rebecca Lucente says:

You really are a very talented writer. And that is not a euphemism.

Posted on 03/05/2010 at 4:12 PM

ItsyBitsy says:

Matt! (I know this is pretty late, but better late than never) If you really enjoy the friendliness of people from the midwest (as I have also heard of their generally nice dispositions) I hear they’re all in Tampa! And St. Petersburg and Clearwater… Just the whole other side of the state!
So if you’re way too used to warm Florida weather to leave the state, you can still feel the warmth and friendliness just 4 hours away.
