Miami Trivia

There is a 5-page thread at UrbanPlanet discussing Miami and South Florida trivia. If you enjoy such things, I recommend reading it. You will find some interesting facts about the area. For instance:

  • The word “Miami” comes from the Tequesta word “Mayaimi”, which has been translated as “sweet water”.
  • Either Miami or India is home to the world’s largest Banyan tree.
  • The video game Vice City is modeled after Miami.
  • Real estate developer, Edgardo Defortuna, owns President Richard Nixon’s former Miami vacation home. The home has been remodeled, but the Presidential Seal still remains on the front door.

A highlight comes when KendallKid shares this piece of Miami trivia:

During the Cuban Missle crisis the government brought into Miami surface to air missles. It has also been rumored that on the corner of kendall drive and 127th (near best buy)there used to be a store house for Nuclear missles after the crisis, Reporters have often tried to gain access to the area which at the time was blocked by a 10 foot man made hill and a barbed wire fence. The reporters where constantly turned away.

There are many more interesting things to learn such as:

  • The TV show “Golden Girls” does not accurately depict life in Miami.
  • Miami is the birthplace of booty music, thanks to 2 Live Crew.
  • Broward County is scared of Miami-Dade.

It’s a lively discussion. Check it out.
