Fisher Island - Invasion Shirt and Video

December 05, 2007 By Gus in Miami: Local News  | 2 Comments

SEIU Local 11 (the Fisher Island workers union) recently held a contest to come up with creative ideas for invading Fisher Island beach. My idea was to use the Duck Tours land and sea vehicle to get the protesters ashore.

Thanks for the shirt!

Fisher Island Invasion Video

On November 17th, 2007, several boatloads of activists pulled up to Fisher Island, jumped off the boats, and swam to shore.

ABOVE: Watch a video of the Fisher Island invasion.

Then the protesters marched through the streets, demanding better treatment and wages.

Congrats on the shirt!  You want my honest opinion about the whole Fisher Island shpeal..
The Ferry: as long as it’s not run by public dollars, they can <strike>ask</strike> tell people to stand or sit wherever they want.  That said, those people FORCED to stand and breathe fumes should get checked out by doctors first, do some homework at night using online medical journals and then get a lawyer.  Fisher Island, and it’s residents as a whole liable party,  have plenty of money to pay you for your failing health- even if your boss offers inadequate insurance.

The fact is that employers are not obligated to offer insurance and people are not obligated to accept those as employment conditions so I don’t understand those concerns…

I also don’t see the issue with where employees can and cannot go.  Most hospitality or service industry employees will tell you that there are certain areas they are not allowed to frequent.  Heck, casino employees are not allowed to gamble at their places of employment.  That’s not illegal and here again, if you don’t like the terms of employment, don’t accept the job.

On the beach issue: Legally, if it’s a public beach, then by all means there needs to be public access.  That said, the image with the boats in the distance just off shore made me chuckle.  I know someone looked out their million dollar window that morning and thought there was another boat lift!  The view is nice but trust me, Fisher Island’s beach is rocky and yucky…if I had the option to go there, I probably wouldn’t.

BY the way, I didn’t mean to be so drab on your post + I got so carried away with that police chase that just zipped by that I forget to say that Gus doesn’t look his age…AND I want his tooth whitener.
