Matt Cutt’s, a software engineer from Google, just unboxed his new Google $200 Computer:
Why should you be interested? Well, instead of Windows, it comes installed with gOS, which is a version of Ubuntu that is customized to work well with web-based tools from Google. The “gPC” stands for Green PC, not Google PC as some people have thought:
Why is this big news? For many years, people have talked about how a computer for every child would revolutionize the world, but this was never possible because the Windows operating system was too expensive.
The gPC’s come with free, pre-installed software that includes Mozilla Firefox, gMail, Meebo Instant Messaging, Skype, Google Documents & Spreadsheets, Google Calendar, Google News, Blogger, the Xine Movie Player, and Open Office. It also is fully integrated with Google Maps and Google411.
Wallmart has already sold out of the Everex TC2502 Green gPC, but a company spokesman said many, many more computers will be available for purchase on their website in the next few weeks.
Thanks for revolutionizing the world, Google!
