Don Aronow Comments Offer a Wild Story of Their Own

July 03, 2010 By Matt Meltzer in Miami: Local News  | 55 Comments

Read this article if you are unfamiliar with the case

Three years ago, I wrote an article for this site on the murder of speedboat magnate Don Aronow. While the article itself is an interesting recap of the entire Aronow saga, the comments section is what makes this the most bizarre piece I’ve ever written. The comments range from people who did time with the accused killers to a mobster’s son to the niece of an alleged hitman. Each having their own theories and “inside scoop” as to what really happened that fateful day in February 1987. So the Aronow story on this site is now really two stories, as the comments have taken on a life of their own.

For those who have not perused the end of the article, here are some highlights of what’s been uncovered:

“BLUE THUNDER” ‘S REAL KILLER, FRANK SCHWEIHS

image

Frank Schwiehs, a reputed mafia hit man, apparently matches the composite witness sketch of the man who shot Aronow. A reader named “Taylor” cited Schweihs as the probable killer along with former NFL player Wayne Bock. Schweihs is also labeled the killer in “Blue Thunder,” a novel about the Aronow case. Schweihs sued the publisher of the book - from prison -  for defamation of character and lost. He is currently appealing.

To that end, Redromchicago, offers up some interesting facts from the FBI…

image

A FBI agent, in 1989 found the Dark Blue Lincoln, it belonged to a man that lived in Fox Lake Illinois. He had loaned it to Frank Schweihs for several weeks. The agent talked to the owner of the car, who said Frank Schweihs borrowed the car a week before the murder. The FBI traced the car, which had been sold to a new owner in Indiana. The FBI talked to the new owner and took photo’s of it and showed several people that saw the shooting. The car was said, by the people that never were followed up by Metro Dade, to be the one that they saw. When I asked questions to the agent that took the photos of the car, he told me, “I can’t talk about that”.

BOBBY YOUNG MURDERED IN PRISON?

image

Bobby Young’s former brother-in-law – going by the handle “No Name” -  reports that Bobby Young died in prison of natural causes in March 2009. Young had gotten out of prison for Aronow’s murder in the late-90s, and then put back in.
A few comments later, another reader going by “noname” identifies himself as an 80s marijuana smuggler who served time with Bobby Young at Coleman Medium and became his friend. He ends his comment with the riddle ‘It’s all about pussy,” a reference we later find out to be to Young’s ex-wife.

Bobby Young was apparently writing a book while he was in prison about the Aronow case, and a movie was also in the works. Noname, among others, thinks this is why he was ultimately killed. Some of Young’s friends from prison also wonder why he got beat up by a fellow inmate while a guard watched, since he was apparently well-liked among inmates.

A reader claiming to be John Panzavecchia, the son of a mobster by the same name who Young killed in 1984, joins the discussion to point out that, innocent or guilty, Bobby Young is still scum. He rips everyone who stands up for Bobby Young for taking the rap for the crime and not being a “snitch.”

ARONOW CHEATING BOTH COPS AND SMUGGLERS

image

“Smugglers cove” offers up a theory that “Aronow built fast boats for smugglers, then faster boats for the gov’t, then faster boats for the smugglers, then faster boats for the smugglers. Someone just got tired of having to pay a monthly fee to don for the faster of the boats. It was rumored that with his arrangement with the gov’t, he would put tracking devices on the smugglers and get a payout from the gov’t for the bust when he tracked the boat from the Bahamas or mother ships off-coast.”

“Fountain Designer” concurs that “Aronow had agreed to ‘glass in’ special transducers or the like to allow boats sold to suspected drug runners to be tracked by the Fed’s.  The theory here is that once the drug lords got wind of this they had Aronow’s card pulled.”

VICTIM OF AN AMERICAN DYNASTY?

image

Many references are made to the Bush family’s ties to Don Aronow. Redfromchicago wonders why Bobby Young got such a good deal for confessing to premeditated murder. The fact that Bush Sr. was Vice President, and the DEA was upset when Aronow sold the Blue Thunder operation to a rival builder is pointed out.

Another smuggler named Tommy Teagle suggests the Aronow and former Florida governor Jeb Bush were involved in a smuggling ring.

A link to an unauthorized Bush biography is also posted by “noname” that implicated Aronow in the Iran-Contra scandal and Bush’s phony “war on drugs.”

Another commenter suggests the Bush family has kept a mainstream Aronow movie from coming out.

There are countless other comments at the end, with tales of reckless speedboating and reminiscences of an era gone by. My personal favorite is the guy who talks about staying up all night doing coke and then going lobstering out near Stiltsville, but those comments could make for a novel if they really wanted to.

RAKONTUR TACKLES ANOTHER 80S ICON

image

Many commenters on the Aronow story were calling for some sort of movie to be made about this saga. And, not surprisingly, Billy Corben, Alfred Spellman, and the Rakontur gang are deep in the process of putting one together. The makers of “Cocaine Cowboys” and “The U” are currently in the process of taking on another of Miami’s iconic aspects of the 1980s and chronicling this case. The yet-untitled Don Aronow project is currently in production and a release date was unavailable.

When I learned that Rakontur was going to be doing a movie on the Aronow murder, I thought maybe their production staff would be interested in some of the lunacy being thrown around in the comments section of my article . And while the comments of this article didn’t offer anything of use, Director Lindsey Snell set the record straight on some of the claims that the readers made.

image

Frank Schwiehs and “his” Lincoln:
“Actually, that theory has been completely disproven. The Lincoln was actually black and did not belong to anyone in Illinois.”

John Panzavecchia and the Dixie Mafia:“Dixie Mafia was, in the 60s and 70s, a group of good ol’ boy criminals in the Southeast.  There was sort of a resurgence of people, like Panzavecchia, wanting to bring back the old Dixie Mafia in the 80s.  They weren’t ‘real’ Dixie Mafia.  They were pushers and junkies. The coincidence? Bobby Young was in Cuba with a man named Jerry Jacoby, the name that was given by the man who walked into Aronow’s office prior to the murder.”

On the possible Bush connections to the murder:“If anything the Bush aspect is over reported; the only significance he had in this case was the pressure he and the feds put on Miami-Dade police to close this case, which led them to overlook the logical conclusions and go after Kramer.” Snell added she could not find a source to back up any hint of Bush family involvement.

image

So it seems that, much like the JFK assassination, there are a lot of holes in the official story, and a lot of very probable alternative theories. But, at the end of the day, the police have their official story of whodunit, and they are sticking to it. Despite all the claims otherwise, and despite the forthcoming movie, we will probably never really know who shot Don Aronow. But trying to figure it out sure is a lot of fun.

Great article, Matt!  You are added to the list of Aronow legends!  Maybe it’s best to leave the “Miami Vice” days of the 80s lie.  But it was a lot of fun to remember!

REDFROMCHICAGO says:

Hey Matt, have you ever seen the photo’s of the Lincoln?  Have you ever talked to the same people that the FBI talked to that identified the shooter and driver? Bad questions on my part, I know you haven’t. Have you ever seen the unedited video tapes with Frank?  Even the Chicago Sun Times hasn’t seen them, all they got is what was played in court.  I give you a hint on one thing: some said the car was black, come say it was Dark Navy Blue. If you had followed up on the car back then you would have known the truth.  I’m sure you never followed up on the murder weapon.  I always wondered why Frank Schweihs sued the publisher of “Blue Thunder” for defamation of character, and Jeb Bush never did sue for what was written about a partnership between Aronow and himself being partners in drug smuggling, ” major cocaine deal with the Colombian’s and owed $2.5 and never paid it to them.  A hired gun like Frank sued about his character, and the son of a US vice president didn’t sue for defamation of character?

Posted on 07/05/2010 at 2:58 PM

Matt Meltzer says:

Jeb is a public figure, so he couldn’t sue. Frank Schweihs, however, notsomuch.

The other stuff, you’d have to ask the movie director who I quoted on that. She could probably answer those questions better than I.

RED FROM CHICAGO says:

I guess if the “movie” is made it will be a work of fiction.  Sense I posted my comment I contacted two 3 letter agency’s. They confirmed the story about Jeb and knowing about the triggerman that murdered Don Aronow.  The truth is very complicated.  I know who, and why, what I’m not sure about is which player was CIA and a close friend of an X President.  I’m pretty sure Oliver North knows.  I spoke to a agent that was in the Marine Corps. and knew North.  He said when he was going through training with him in VA.  “Oli was the man that could get anything for someone who wanted it”, I was told.

As for Frank, his first contract hit for a 3 letter agency, was the murder of Marilyn Monroe, ordered by the boss of the Chicago outfit in 1962. It had something to do with JFK. Frank died with many secrets.  However, when JL was in prison, I sat with Frank day after day, sometimes with him looking into a hidden video camera. In 1987 and 1988 I spent a lot of time with him.  I’m sure that Frank was the trigger man.  But who cares?  Movies are entertainment. So are TV shows.  The courts ruled on that a long time ago. So go make a buck or two on something you read about, if you can.  Who knows it might be an other Casino. Now that was a hit.  I hope you have some big bucks backing your movie.

Monrad says:

This has been a great discussion.  I haven’t read anything regarding Schweihs being involved in any contract operations with a 3 letter agency.  Nothing like that came out in any of the recent trials but perhaps there are things that have as yet not been revealed.  Matt I truly appreciate your column and your summarizing all the comments on the comments section.  Can’t wait for the movie.  Please keep us informed.

A hired handgun reminiscent of guileless sued on the area under discussion of his temperament, and the youngster of a US vice leader didn’t sue for denouncement of temperament? surprised

Red says:

The reason I responded to this blog was because the FBI had taped many conversations with myself and other Chicago outfit members. During one of those conversations, before Don was murdered, Frank told me on video tape, ” I won’t see ya’s for a while, I got to go out of town to make a hit” This tape took place in the timeframe in 1987. Many of the things that Frank said were never used in a court. Just as the murder of Jonny Roselli, who’s body washed up in Key Bescayne that was never on record, or the murder of Richard Cane and many other’s. I testified in “Family Secrets” and was told that the tapes would never be given to the public in full content by Mitch Mars AUSA. The files of the FBI show what I said were true. After I takled to a Hollywood Producer, tuesday April 12, 2011 and a retired FBI agent on a confrence call many murders that Frank did and other matters about the “Chicago Outfit”, I was told by the retired agent that hudreds of files were never followed up on because of “National Security”. Some of them are about JFK, some of them were about Jonny Roselli’s body washing up in Key Biscayne, or Richard Cane’s Murder. There were many that Frank talked to me about, Some were talked about on Video Tape in my home.  When is the TRUTH going to come out to the public? I think the public has the right to know the truth.  I called Miami Beach 411 trying to reach Matt Melzer today Monday April 18, 2011. I told the gal that answered the phone I wanted to contact him and she said she would pass on my e-mail address to him. Who knows if he even cares? This is a blog, and some blogs never reach the truth, just as the truth is not always printed in the News. I know that from personal expirence.

Yes the documentary is true. My aunt was contacted by billy to tell her memories of those days. I went to south beach to the place they were filming and also went to the hollywood boardwalk where Ben used to roam. I miss uncle bob everyday. He really was a character n would have given u the shirt of his back if u needed it. When he was last arrested, the cops said they never came across such a giving convict.  He was very sick though, and that’s y they said he died of natual causes. However he n another inmate did get jnto it and he was stabbed and in the hospital for many days was paralyzed for a while until he needed assistance with a cane. When my uncle was released from the hospital the other inmate who stabbed him were put back together in population causing another altracation. While bobby wad out he had participated in a clinical study for his disease n it became dormant. When he went back to prison it started up again and the govt did not allow bobby to get the medical treatments because it was only a stufy thwt he showed a relapee on. By the way who are u lake girl? Maybe a niece ftom another marriage?

REDFROMCHICAGO says:

The documentary is not right about Arnonow.  This is one thing I know for sure.  The questions I have are, who funded it?  This one, there are so many in San De ago, murder drugs.  Just who is Lindesy?  Who is paying her?  This whole thing is a scam.  But why?  Politics?  Protecting some of the guilty? OH, does it have to do wit a 3 letter agency?  Are they using someone for something? Matt you did a fine job, it got my attention.  And it’s just a job for you.  Other people? It’s a way of life, unanswered questions. BTW I hope they paid your aunt well, (missing him). Get every dollar out of this scam.
I’m not bitter, it may sound like it, I’m shocked at all the lies and gossip.  But that sells in movies, and news.  It sold in Casino, Lefty never told anyone the truth, he just never did so he could live out his days in Miami close to Myer.  Tony ordered the hit on Lefty.  Tony and Mikie were not beaten to death in a corn field in Indiana. They were beaten in a basement of a house in a suburb of Chicago and taken to the cornfield and buried alive. That’s a fact.  But the movie grossed millions of dollars.

I can’t help but wonder how this one will do.

redfromchicago: its a documentary with alot to do with ben kramer and bobby, not on aronow. my aunt is the green eyed kat dancer who was referenced above. She was not paid much, she sat there for 2 days reliving those old days on camera. She knew ben kramer before she met bobby, they had a history. Lindsay and billy from the Rakontur gang mentioned above. it was a low budget interview style documentary is all. my uncle was writing a book in prision before he passed and i will always wonder if it was released to our family and just nothings been said or if it was kept hidden. If i had money to back it my aunt could write a hell of a movie! no need for lies and gossip, straight from the horses mouth.

ARODONTKNOW says:

First thing first rakontor productions in my opinion is garbage.Cocaine Cowboys1 was’nt that bad or a documentary. Although some of the Bobby Munday stuff was inaccurate, even from his own mouth (can’t blame him for that) Cocaine cowboys 2 was pure bullshit, not the Griselda part itself but the charles cosbey nitwit character was the most unbelivable pos liar I’ve ever seen on film, even with the horrible photoshopped pictures. ( I bet rakontur wishes they could take another shot at them). They should and i’m sure they are, ashamed of them selfs. Words cannot describe how irrate I was after watching that peice of shit (well, maybe if I really tried) I think I tried for the next 3 days to get my money back, and I refused to ask nicely. (Rakontur did’nt want to talk about it,I don’t blame them) FU*#+:% HORRIBLE!!! #* ) As for Silvio Sardi, he’s another nitwit that refuses to do his homework , has brain damage,or took money from Jack Kramer to finance that peice of sh#* . (THUNDERMAN the Don Aronow story) If you hav’nt seen it, don’t buy it, borrow it fom someone or check the trash, there should be plenty of them there. Redfromchicago has my undivided attention at the moment. Hey red , I know Ridley Scott was going to start working on an Aronow movie (Scott Free Productions) they’re pretty heavy. They’d proabably like to talk to you. I’d really like to talk to WB.

You’re on to something . I was thinking exactly the same thing about 25 mins.into the(Silvio Sardi) Thunderman documentary.  I think it was nearly a total piece shit. The only person/s that could have possibly influenced that sorry ass doc would have to be Jack Kramer and Co.

Red From Chicago says:

@ARODONTKNOW   I’m sorry about all of this.  Right now I’m working as a technical advisor on a movie, that has nothing to do with Don’s murder.  However if you or anyone wants to get in contact with me, you or they can reach me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).  Aside from giving an interview to a British company, that has aired on NAGO many times, the only other interview I gave was to CBS years ago.  When ever I’m mentioned in the news they air a clip about me.  I’ve been talked about in several books, 9 to be precise. Just last summer, I was contacted by a retired FBI agent about his book that he’s written about the JFK assignation.  He talked to several people about me and the next day I had calls from other FBI agents that had lost contact with me.  All of them told me that they had been contacted by a retired agent and wanted a reference about me.  We had a few laughs, and they all told him that I was hard to work with but what ever I said was the truth, and I don’t play games.  I am curious what you want from me?  Information?  I’m told I’m a walking vault of information by many people from DC to Chicago to LA and Las Vegas.  Aside from many things that were said about me in books or the press that were lies, I never cared that much except to contact the writer and ask them why they did it.  The most common answer is that they couldn’t find me to contact me, so they made it up. If Scott Free Productions wants to get in contact with me, this is the best way to start, by e-mail. Then after I check them out I call them on the phone, if it comes to more than that, we meet at a location of my choice.  I don’t live like most people.  Cocaine Cowboys was a D rated movie as far as I’m concerned.  Mostly true was Casino. The script writer Nick is working on the new film that has my interest.  And Jeb Bush is a public figure, he just thought that a blog would go away, at least that’s what I was told by CNN in Atlanta GA.

Hi missing him thanks for the reply, i don’t I’ll ever forgive rakontur for CC 2. It’s pretty obvious at some point in production they fired their photoshop tech and hired an animator. I hate to say this, but with rakontur and the business they’re in you gotta do what you gotta do.(I’m getting soft i think i just defended them)  Even by their own definition (rak on tur’)n. one who tells stories with skill. It doesn’t say, accuracy, honesty or validity. So i guess the jokes on me.(damned if i didn’t just defend them again #$%&!) . Anyhoo if they try to do a Ben Kramer doc, their intel /research dept. needs to step it up atleast 6 notches.  However that’s just my opinion, i could be wrong!      Does anyone know if Jack Kramer is still with us. (doubt it)) If he’s not that should loosen Ben up a little. Goodaye to ya.

BTW. I got a response from Metz the other day. (1/31/12) In it he stated that he had a letter from Ben Kramer show up at his apartment a couple of weeks ago. No details other than it was not addressed to him.

@missininghim, Sorry, I just received the email form this posts. Don’t know why it just now showed up. I will agree with everything you said about Uncle Bobby.  He was a character, loved his family whole heartily and would do anything for them.  If someone hurt them, then they would get hurt!!  I still remember 36yrs later, as a little girl, I flew to Florida with my mom and stayed with him and Mitzy. I remeber going to the window in the high-rise apartment and looking out. Before I knew it, Uncle Bobby swooped me up and placed me in this oversized chair.  He looked me straight in the eyes, raised his index finger and said in this very clam and soft voice, “never go to the window”.  Even at 9yrs old, I knew he was protecting us. To “Hell” to anyone who ever spoke bad of him.  Apparently they had no clue who he was or what he was about.  For the record, I’m not a niece from a previous marriage.

Do you know of the current activities of the Outfit in Miami??  What about on the West Coast.  After Joey Hansen died and the indian got sent away, I think their operations may have disappeared.  They still got Sam Cecola in Vegas running a strip club.  Rizzo is now living in Orange County from what I hear.  In my opinion the Outfit is not functioning anymore.  It has a bunch of independent members doing their own thing.  Also,  is Wayne Bock still alive??  I heard he died.  All the old timers are dieing off.  All the legends who did heavy work are dying and bringing their secrets with them.  Nobody is talking.

REDFROMCHICAGO says:

I’m still alive, Wayne is dead.  I outlived them all.  But the story is true, the facts are accurate.  We have an election comming up and it’s not the best time to post anything about the Bush family.
It’s odd that some think that I was Wayne.  I watched Frank and Wayne clock Steve Touchin years ago getting ready to murder him.  They never got the chance to finish the job.  When Touchin was told about it by the U.S. Attorney’s office, he refused to testify against them.
It’s all about the money and secrets about the money and how thy all got it.  GREED!

I’m going to have to reach out to Billy to see what happened with the documentary. I know that my aunt came down to Miami to shoot it like 6 years ago (wow I cant believe that its been that long). I was on set with them and provided some more recent pictures that I had of my uncle.  I still think of him a lot and wish things were different. I’m guessing someone put a stop to it to the doc like they did the book and movie…

Anna Schweihs says:

So much speculation. A whole lot of talking. What I know is that my family’s name still gets respect in Chicago. Accusing Frank of anything is pointless. What matters is can you prove it? And Red, you boast about testifying like you deserve a medal for it. That’s just plain crazy.

Arodontknow/Thomasam says:

Hi Anna, thanks for chiming in. Red’s not really boasting ,he kinda does this for a living.
You’re here you’re talking, anything else you want us to know?
Either way you’re welcome and thanks for dropping by.

I’m glad to see that the conversation continues on this case.  The last two comments are very interesting. Red has made several statements that make it seems if he was he was involved in some legal matters or trials involving organized crime in Chicago and Miami.
