[Video] Tony Alva Catching Air at the Art Basel Skateboard Park

December 12, 2007 By Gus in Miami: Local News  | 8 Comments

Last week during Art Basel, legendary skateboarder, Tony Alva, was in Miami to participate in the “Concrete Waves” art project at the Art Positions container courtyard in Collins Park.

The Festival built an homage to skate culture that included a 70-foot elongated skateboard mini ramp designed specifically for Tony’s demo. Unlike most ramps, the center section had two small bumps which helped to highlight Tony’s surf/skate-style.

Learn Why Tony Alva Is A Skateboarding Legend

Tony Alva was born in 1957 and is a founding member of the Dogtown and the Z-Boys crew from Santa Monica, California.

In the video, you won’t see Tony landing any crazy tricks, he just works the ramp with style, executing frontside and backside kickturns, and busting a few of his signature airs (ariels) that made him famous like this…

You see, Tony Alva is widely credited as being the first person to ever do a frontside ariel in a pool.

I’m happy the video shows Tony still catching air today.

The music we chose to accompany the video is “Otherside” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. I like the song; the lyrics speak to how many hours, days, and years Tony has skated.

“How long, how long will I slide
Separate my side
I don’t, I don’t believe it’s bad”

Skateboarding is not a crime.

Why is Miami Beach the only (cool) city in the United States without a skateboard park?

Would anyone like to join me in a petition to build a skateboard park in South Beach?
