Ways to Improve Your Credit Score

If you’re looking for ways to improve your credit score, start by investigating.

Since it’s your credit we’re discussing here, it’s important to realize that the higher the credit score average, the more it opens doors. Many of the low interest lending opportunities are available to the higher scoring applicants.

If your credit application was not approved in the past month, you may request a free copy of your credit report.

The three main credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion will be required to provide you, a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months. To receive a free copy of your credit report call: 877-322-8228.

3 ways to improve your report

When you receive the copy of your credit report, focus on the areas which effect your credit score.

1. Look for misinformation, and inaccurate information. Sometimes a credit grantor will report a delinquent credit card payment, and you may have not been delinquent (late).

2. Review the public records section which may be reporting tax liens, bankruptcies or court judgments which have been rendered against you.

3. Make sure the credit card accounts that show up belong to you. Report any inaccurate information.

The Federal Trade Commission enacted a law which requires them to furnish you your report.  The aforementioned ruling was rendered as part of the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

The FTC also provides a useful credit related website with tips on ways to improve your credit score.

Thanks for the great tips Gus!  I have forwarded a link to this page to many of my clients.  When looking to buy real estate one should allays start by checking their credit report to see if there is anything that can be down to improve their credit score.  This can increase their buying power buy lowering the rate they qualify for.
