On the occasion of its fifteenth anniversary, The Wolfsonian–Florida International University presents +5: Recent Acquisitions from The Wolfsonian Collection, an exhibition showcasing the dynamic growth of the museum’s collection over the past five years. +5 highlights approximately 100 objects obtained through donation or acquisition, adding depth and breadth to the collection’s already strong foundation of art and design.

The exhibition, on view April 23, 2010 through September 26, 2010, features objects acquired through donation or purchase since The Wolfsonian’s previous exhibition X: A Decade of Collection in September 2005 and includes decorative arts, architectural elements, books, posters, and printed ephemera. The new acquisitions strengthen and broaden the collection’s core themes of design reform, urbanism, travel and transportation, advertising, and political propaganda.

Some of the exhibition highlights include:
• A large unusual Teco bottle vase with a swirled base designed by Fritz Albert, c. 1905. The vase is a rare and outstanding example of the American Arts and Crafts movement.
• A significant collection of photochroms (color lithographs) by William Henry Jackson, the American photographer known especially for his images of American Indians and of the West. His photographs of Yellowstone played a critical role in establishing the country’s first national park.
• A tabletop sculpture by Gio Ponti and Tomaso Buzzi designed for the Italian Foreign Ministry and produced by Richard-Ginori.
• A chrome-plated floor torchère or floor lamp designed by Eliel Saarinen and Walter von Nessen. The lamp, donated by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, was from Duke’s estate in Hillsborough, New Jersey.
• A rare oversized portfolio illustrated by artist and activist Hugo Gellert that was published in 1943 in a limited edition of fifty-four. The portfolio contains double-page plates with excerpts of speeches by Vice President Henry A. Wallace and full-page, silk-screened illustrations.
• A historically significant oak sideboard for the Oak Parlour in Old Heath Hall by Thomas Jeckyll.
• Exceptional art moderne paintings, songbooks, and other works from the Franck MacCoy (Mac) Harshberger archive.
• Delicate watercolors of local scenes created as part of the Florida Art Project for the WPA.

The Wolfsonian’s collection originated with thousands of objects privately held by founder Mitchell Wolfson, Jr., which was subsequently donated to Florida International University. Over the past fifteen years, the collection has grown through the gifts of many private donors and collectors, as well as carefully determined acquisitions. Many of the gifts have been donated in the last five years by a wide-range of local, national, and international collectors, including: New York collector Leonard A. Lauder with a significant gift of American World War Two graphic works; Illinois collector and former CEO of Sara Lee Corporation, John Bryan with rare works from the British Arts and Crafts period; prolific artist and art director Steven Heller with books and ephemeral items related to twentieth century totalitarian governments; New York area collector Gregg G. Where does one draw the line drawn between "able bodied" and "disabled"? Find out as Hugh Herr, MIT professor, researcher, and inventor, presents Merging Man and Machine at The Wolfsonian–Florida International University on Friday, April 16 at 7pm.

As director of the Biomechatronics Group at The MIT Media Lab and a double amputee himself, Herr is leading the race to merge the human body and the machine, forever changing how we think about human capability in the process. In this talk Herr will introduce new research initiatives soon to benefit us all. Some of these advancements include: the development of smart prostheses that emulate and even exceed the capabilities of biological limbs, such as the first battery-powered ankle-foot prosthesis which provides amputees with a more natural gait; social-emotional prostheses for persons with autism; and even robots that monitor and protect the health of children and the elderly.

Hugh Herr: Merging Man and Machine is presented in conjunction with the recent opening of Advertising for Health, an installation on view at The Wolfsonian that explores nearly a century of advertising for medicine, pharmacy, and public health. The installation features rare advertisements, printed ephemera, and posters from a recent gift by William H. Helfand, a recognized author and print collector. Together with a selection of printed materials and objects from a rarely-exhibited segment of The Wolfsonian’s collection, these works reflect, through their design strategies, changing ideas about health in the Americas and Europe between the late nineteenth century and the Second World War. The objects on view also encourage reflection on the “pursuit of health” in the present by conveying the lively history underlying issues that remain current today.

Saturday April 10, 2010 will be one of many nights in support of a great cause, specific not only to South Florida, but the world. From 6-9pm, there will be a photography exhibition held at MINIbar, a new restaurant in the Design District located at 3612 NE 2nd Avenue.

The photographs on display will be donated works from local photographer, Anthony Jordon (photographer for Miami New Times, Miami Magazine, and http://www.miamiartzine.com). The photo exhibition is titled "Living & Loving: Celebrating our Comfort." It's a tribute to all people enjoying everyday living and a positive motivation to those infected/affected by HIV/AIDS.

The works will feature various couples representative of all cultures and lifestyles, which make Miami the diverse city that it is. The photos will be auctioned to generate funds in support of Team Repeat Offenders, one of the many teams participating in AIDS Walk Miami.

The bidding will begin at 6:30pm but in the silent auction fashion, where all works will be on display from bidding start time until 8:30pm. At that time, bidding ends, and the highest bidders can then collect their new prized photo. It's as simple as stopping by, viewing the works (and the crowd for your competition) and hoping for the best when the bidding ends.

While at MINIbar don't forget to sample some of the eats, treats, and wines available. There is no cover for the event, ample parking around the area and a great environment to bring any and everyone out to enjoy a night of photography and goodwill.

Swim4LifeMiami, PADDLE ON and Cynthia Aguilar present the 2nd Annual South Beach Kommona Paddle, scheduled for Satuday morning, April 10th, 2010 at the Purdy docks on Miami Beach to raise awareness and funds for AIDS Walk Miami.

The Kommona Paddle is a 5 mile paddle in the Intracoastal waterway, circling Miami Beach's Venetian Islands. You don't have to be a pro or even know anything about paddling to join Kommona Paddle. You can Kayak, SUP, Paddleboard, Surf ski or even create your own water craft (as long as it can make it to the finish line).

Registration fees per craft are $20 for early sign-ups, $25 to sign-up on the week of the event or $30 to sign up on the day of the event. Hats and goodies are provided to participants. Awards will be given to both the three and five mile category winners. 100% of the proceeds raised from this event will go directly to the AIDS Walk Miami fundraiser.

Pre-Registration Party: April 9, 2010 at 7pm-9pm at F1rst Surf Shop (100 Collins Ave, Miami Beach). Beverage provided for everyone. Last chance to register for $25.

All participants must be at least 18 years old and will have to sign a waiver. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis and the instructor will determine when the class is "full." Everyone must bring their own yoga mat, water, and towel. Beginners, intermediate, and advanced welcome.
