Insider tips
Hotelier Ian Schrager and designer Philippe Starck have created a
high-end hotel that's luxurious and a little surreal. The Delano's
lobby has billowing, floor-to-ceiling curtains and whimsical
furniture. The indoor-outdoor lobby is the focal point of the hotel.
Guests flow through the space, with its many intimate seating areas,
proceed to the garden, and then arrive at the showpiece pool, which
has underwater classical music, lounge chairs, and private cabanas.
The rooftop spa, Agua, offers a full line
of treatments. The spa has a 360-degree view of Miami Beach and is
modeled on an ancient bathhouse. Delano offers a variety
of dining options. The Blue Door restaurant, under
the direction of restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow and Chef Claude Troisgros,
serves modern French cuisine with Brazilian and global influences.
Valet parking is available, but you can
save a few dollars and park at the nearby Convention Center garage
for a rate of $8 per day.
Wireless Internet access (Wi-Fi connections) is
available throughout the hotel,
guest rooms, and poolside for a charge of $10 a day.

Delano Hotel "Loved
the Delano"
Date: August 20, 2004

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at the Delano. The interior is very
special and extremely stylish, staff is very friendly and helpful,
service overall excellent, the food in the restaurant and the sushi
bar excellent. The rooms are small, especially for American Standards.
Fancy and stylish pool area, beautiful beach.Valet parking.
Delano Hotel "Stay anyplace elese
but here"
Date: August 3, 2004
Reviewer: Miami Beach 411 User, Columbus, OH
If you plan to stay at the Delano, may I suggest any of the other
5 star hotels in South Beach. I have now stayed at them all after
I stayed at the Delano in June of 2004. I only chose the Delano because
all the reviews were glowing and it had the reputation of being the
crown jewel of South Beach, and it seemed like a wonderful birthday
surprise for my spouse . All I can say after my stay is that if the
Delano is the crown jewel, I’ll pass and frequent any of the
other hotels in South Beach. At all of the other 5 star hotels I have
always been treated as if I was a special VIP and welcome to be there.
At the Delano I was treated like the uninvited party crasher that
the hostess wished would just pack up go home. At check in I was given
a card with my name on it and told to have it with me at all times
for identification purposes. My spouse was also given a card to carry
at all times. For the entire period we stayed at the Delano, we were
asked to present our cards EVERWHERE we went, from stepping onto the
steps in front of the hotel, to entering the lobby, to having a drink
at the bar, to eating at the restaurant, to walking past the pool
on our way to the beach, to swimming in the pool. When making the
reservations, which were made directly through the hotel with a credit
card to insure the room would be held due to an early evening arrival,
I paid an extra premium of 35% to upgrade my accommodations to a 9th
floor or higher full ocean view room. At check in we were given a
6th floor partial ocean view at the same premium price of the original
room we reserved. The room was clean and nice, but we were never given
more than one washcloth, bath towel and face towel or robe for the
two of us to use on any of the nights of our stay. On the one night
we decided to have dinner at the Delano we had appetizers at the sushi
bar (the only enjoyable experience we had at the Delano) and then
went to the main restaurant to continue our meal. When we requested
a table we were told that we would have to sit in the lobby to enjoy
our “after dinner” meal and were refused a seat in the
main restaurant, even though only 1/3 of the total seats were taken.
On the one day we decided to relax by the pool, we were directed to
a poolside chaise lounge and we ordered our poolside drinks. Before
the drinks even arrived we were told by a pool employee that we were
not allowed to sit poolside and were ushered to a chaise lounge to
the rear of the poolside bar next to the garbage area. The final straw
was on the morning when we were getting ready to check out, after
being told we could have a late checkout, only to find out that was
not the case, I had to kill a small red cockroach who was scurrying
across the floor towards my suitcase. I still feel guilty about this
because I’m sure the cockroach was as anxious to leave the Delano
as I was and I prevented its escape. My spouse and I visit South Beach
often, and will continue to make frequent getaway visits, but we won’t
be staying at the Delano ever again. We will take our business back
to any of the other 5 star hotels we have stayed at in the past.
